the way pepper just looks so very fearful, takes a deep heaving breath and grabs onto tony with both arms trying to keep him *here* and safe. the way she instantly and instinctually knows that world is coming to take him away again.

The world, or the need to save the world, takes Tony away from her, anyway. Pepper seew the grainy footage someone posted of Iron Man zooming toward the alien ship before it leaves the planet. She is paralysed in her seat, watching her fiancé disappear into the vastness of space once more. In 2012, Tony returned minutes after disappearing through the wormhole. This time, Pepper waits and waits and waits – even as the world around her descends into chaos. Half of all sentient life turn to dust overnight. Colleagues. Co-workers. Friends. Happy. All gone without so much as a goodbye or a see you soon. The only thing she remembers is the terror in their eyes, as they watched, as they felt their own demise. Still, Pepper hopes that Tony is alive; that he is out there somewhere in space. Maybe he’s trapped. Or hurt. Or having the time of his life cruising the inner rims of the Galaxy. After all, the Avengers have survived the catastrophe. Rhodey has made it out alive. Hell, even the talking raccoon she sees around the Compound is there. So, why not Tony? The alternative is too painful to consider.

and the way tony is so close to her in the first gif but so far away in the second but he’s still reaching out and clinging to her because he knows what he has to do but he really doesn’t want to leave her either
