Don’t be scared to speak/Don’t speak with someone’s tooth/Don’t bargain when you’re weak/Don’t take that sharp abuse/Some patients can’t be saved/But that burden’s not on you/Don’t ever let anyone tell you deserve that/Don’t ever let anyone tell you deserve that/Don’t ever let anyone tell you deserve that/Don’t ever let anyone tell you deserve that/Don’t ever let anyone tell you deserve that/Don’t ever let anyone tell you deserve that/Don’t ever let anyone tell you deserve that/Don’t ever let anyone tell you deserve that

2. How Long, Hadestown- Anais Mitchell

How long?/Just as long as I am your wife/It’s true the earth must die/But then the earth comes back to life/And the sun just goes on rising/And how does the sun even fit in the sky?/It just burns like a fire in the pit of the sky/And the earth is a bird on a spit in the sky/How long?/How long?/How long?

3. Common People, Different Class- Pulp

I took her to a supermarket/I don’t know why but I had to start it somewhere/So it started there/I said pretend you’ve got no money/She just laughed and said “ha you’re so funny”/I said “yeah/But I can’t see anyone else smiling around here”

SHE DIDN’T CHANGE THE PRONOUNS

Okay so it’s always really really good when people don’t change the pronouns in songs but I’d just like to point out that “she” in this song was not referring to an actual woman, but to the church/religion, so naturally she wouldn’t change the pronouns.

Aka please don’t ignore the fact that this song was about a gay relationship originally and “she” was not referring to an actual human being, but religion.

if you look at hozier’s actual statements about the song, he’s pretty clear about the fact that the song is a protest against religion of any kind interfering in a relationship. the music video depicts a gay couple to make this point explicitly.

HOWEVER, that doesn’t mean the ‘she’ in the song is religion, she is his lover (genius has some good dissections with quotes and stuff on this) and it is significant that the pronouns were not changed. to say the song was specifically about a gay realtionship when lyrically it is typically heteronormative is a disservice.

HOWEVER AGAIN: want to hear a better cover of this song by a wlw? check out claudia boleyn’s version. it’s magical.

ugh i just can’t stop thinking about hadestown orpheus being partially sighted and relying on his ‘gift from the gods’ voice and using it as a sort of sonar and hades, being a god, having the power to mess with his gift so during ‘doubt comes creeping in’ the echoing ‘where are you’s are orpheus trying to use his gift to find eurydice but he can’t because hades is cloaking her so for the first time he relies on his eyes not his voice and ugh

and at the beginning he’s so sure of the world providing for him and his love because he believes in the gods and their love for him so at the end he’s left with his faith in his gift and his faith in the gods broken and ugh i’m just absolute trash for this album

ALSO hades and persephone being gods in a post-apocalyptic world who are terrified of the world dying and leaving them still alive but with no-one to believe in them which is why he is so obsessive about preserving the wall and the last bit of the world he used to know and persphone (nature goddess, duh) having more faith in the world being renewed and good lord please stop me i have other things i need to be doing instead of thinking about this

sincewemet:

Are you, are you
Coming to the tree
Where they strung up a man they say murdered three.
Strange things did happen here
No stranger would it be
If we met up at midnight in the hanging tree.

Are you, are you
Coming to the tree
Where the dead man called out for his love to flee.
Strange things did happen here
No stranger would it be
If we met up at midnight in the hanging tree

Are you, are you
Coming to the tree
Where I told you to run, so we’d both be free.
Strange things did happen here
No stranger would it be
If we met up at midnight in the hanging tree.

Are you, are you
Coming to the tree
Wear a necklace of rope, side by side with me
Strange things did happen here
No stranger would it be
If we met up at midnight in the hanging tree
