Marvel Cinematic Universe:
➡ Iron Man 3 (2013) – dir. Shane BlackWhat they don’t actually say out loud:
Frame 1: I am so sorry I put you in this mess but I’m thanking all of my lucky stars and every faceless, nameless god out there that you’re safe.
Frame 2: I am terrified because I was just forcefully and painfully experimented upon. But you came. For a while I was scared Killian’s men had killed you and that would’ve killed me too.
Frame 3: I love you, even when you say shit like that.
Frame 4: I love you too, and I’ll die before I let anything happen to you again.

I’m so sorry for what I said about your dad. That wasn’t fair. You always make the hard choice. You look to help others before yourself.
That’s what you taught me to do. So why hasn’t it ever been enough?

Alex was always so self-sufficient and she pulled back from leaning on her mom after her father died to try and help. She stopped acting like a teenage girl and a child and became an adult. She took on the role of protector from the moment Kara arrived, but I think that ramped up the day the DEO darkened their doorstep (even if she did not know who they were) and later after Jeremiah as killed. Eliza was suddenly a single parent of two teenagers and one of them was still struggling with adapting to Earth, so Alex did what she could to make it easier. She looked for support less and gave it more. She internalised her struggle and tried to be stronger.
Eliza had lost her husband, had dark and terrible questions about his death, and now, now she had no bargaining chip left to keep Kara safe. Kara, who Jeremiah had sacrificed himself for. Kara, who she would keep as safe as possible to honour that sacrifice. Alex pulled way in the aftermath of all that grief. She became a little more closed off and determined, and in her own grief, Eliza never intended to let it creep so far. She didn’t intend to push or drive Alex away, but she needed both girls to survive. She needed them to live and to stay safe. She couldn’t lose another piece of her family.
She was always terrified the DEO would come for one daughter, but she never expected they would take the other.
