the fact that tony immediately starts wisecracking and doesn’t even get a minute to process and freak out about literally dying has me feeling a whole variety of things
jesus chrighst the difference between the two gifs??? the contrast between Tony StarkTM and the man behind the mask. what the fuck. what the actual fuck
that very brief moment the mcu flirted with the idea of disabilities and ableism being real things that exist
i don’t think it’s a coincidence that tony is the one who notices this and points it out. obviously he’s smart and all but also he has a hunk of metal in his chest keeping him alive. the mcu has shied away from properly portraying it as a disability but that’s what it is. he has a hunk of metal in his chest instead of a sternum. it reduces his lung capacity. it almost certainly also works as a pacemaker. it definitely causes him chronic pain (because hunk of metal! in his chest!). so really it’s not surprising that tony would be the one to notice life being made unnecessarily harder for someone else with a disability. and he’s a man who fixes things, so i assume the next helecarrier (which tony helped design) wouldn’t have this problem
Nick Fury, probably:Since yesterday, you’ve moved in with him and now you’re solving crimes saving the world together. Might we expect a happy announcement by the end of the week?
Tony’s relationship with Bruce is so unique in the mcu because it is one of the only times Tony instantly hits it off with someone. If you think about everyone meeting Tony Stark for the first time there is either an argument, a fight, or some kind of negative tension. It usually takes characters half of a movie to warm up to Tony, but that is not the case with Bruce.
I think it’s because while most characters first see Tony as flippant, Bruce sees trust. Tony does not tiptoe around the Hulk like everyone else. The first thing Tony does is mention the elephant in the room. Tony knows what Bruce is, and he’s not afraid of him. Tony does not focus on the bad Hulk has done, but instead sees the potential good Hulk can do. It was probably the first time in a long time that Bruce felt completely accepted by someone.
#so I watched the avengers for the 5,000,000th time today
#and I’m still noticing shit that I didn’t see before.
#THIS SCENE #tony isn’t just making a joke about bruce letting off steam #he’s purposefully getting fury’s attention #because fury is like ADVANCING ON BRUCE #and tony doesn’t want him to get overwhelmed #in the third gif tony sees fury walking towards bruce with an attitude #and tony is all ‘OH HELL NO’ #and then he’s all ‘hey bitch over here’ #and he starts messing with cap #but he doesn’t even look at cap when he’s talking #he’s just looking at fury with his chin up #all defiant and shit #and then fury stops walking toward bruce #tony has achieved his goal #so he looks at bruce #and he’s like #it’s okay #i’ve got your back #i won’t let him hurt you #and btw #that joke about letting off steam? #it really is okay to get angry sometimes #ily man
#tony was just picking a fight to get the attention off bruce
#that smile in the last gif honestly breaks my heart
The reason why Bruce Banner is the strongest avenger in all of Tony’s systems.
And note that it’s Bruce Banner, not The Hulk.
don’t talk to me don’t look at me don’t even think about me until i’m done processing this
look at tony’s face. that’s the face of someone who knows. that’s the face of someone who’s Been There. tony spends all of iron man 2 being Obviously Suicidal and he’s always, always displayed a blantant disregard for his own personal safety. he knows exactly how it feels to be trapped in that small cold dark place in your own mind and he’s heartbroken that bruce, this guy who he’s respected for years and that when they actually meet he gets along well with (rare for tony, he’s so guarded he starts off on the wrong foot with practically everyone), has felt that way too
and bruce. bruce being so lonely for so long and then having someone who is immediately at ease with him and who Gets It. but then in ragnarok he’s not even thrown by “the strongest avenger” being his codename/nickname and yeah maybe he thinks it’s cause of the hulk but i’m willing to bet tony just says stuff like that to him when they hang out. either way it’s bruce, so uncomfortable with himself and others during avengers 1, completely used to a compliment and not shying away from it even when it could refer to “the other guy”. and that’s all tony’s influence
just god, science bros was one of the absolute best bits of avengers 1 and even aou and this was such a nice callback to it
this got me thinking about how incredibly easy it is to misunderstand tony stark’s motivations. obviously this is an example of him not being exactly stellar at teamwork but the reasons why he’s not very good at it aren’t really explored. on the surface this looks like “i’m more capable and better than you and can handle this on my own so just let me deal with it” but that’s not how tony thinks, it’s more “my life is obviously less valuable than yours and jumping straight after them would be an unnecessary risk for you but it’s fine for me so sit back and stay safe”. the reason tony is bad at teamwork is that he doesn’t see himself as equally important to the rest of the team. this is why he tries to make up for his inadequacy with money and tech. we know that he’s able to work with people from the iron man films and the next scene when he’s in the suit, fixing the helecarrier with steve, shows him collaborating with him to restart the engine (and that scene and the nuke scene show his willingness to sacrifice himself). it’s not tony being unpredictable and wilful (although that is part of his character and it is a flaw), it’s his overeagerness to sacrifice himself that makes tony not great at working in a team
-steve is achilles and bucky is patroclus. obviously
-tony is odysseus (and pepper is penelope and peter is telemachus fuck this is cool). we shall spare him the dubcon relationships with circe and calypso because i’m not into that
-nick fury as nestor is the funniest thing i have ever imagined please just picture it
-i don’t hate anyone enough to make them be agamemnon tho. maybe ross?
-natasha is helen SPYING FROM INSIDE THE CITY
-and menelaus is whoever you ship her with because they’re the real love story of the iliad (aside from achilles/patroclus) and paris is rapist trash
-thor is zeus because lol
-bruce is hera cause i ship them and it’s a helluva concept. their relationship is not horrible in this version
-hector isn’t in this au because i can’t watch him die again
-or maybe thor is aeneas, leading his refugee people to a new home. that does put him on a different side to the rest of our heroes tho
-anyway it’s a cool concept and the only thing i won’t budge on is tony being odysseus cause he IS
