robert downey junior doesn’t say a word in this scene. he doesn’t say a word and yet this is the purest crystallisation of tony stark as a character. not a word, and the thing at the core of tony stark is laid completely bare and obvious, that thick seam of self loathing with a centre of pure iron. you can cut deep into tony stark, you can metaphorically slice him to ribbons, you can reduce him to nothing but a bleeding mass and it’s so easy because try as he might to guard it his heart is still so vulnerable. but right before you kill him, right before you deliver that one last emotional death blow, your sword hits iron
