“He told me, Rob.”
“Aye?” said Rob, and shrugged. “Oh, okay. I wouldna argue wi’ a cheese.”

i just finally know what i have to do

i think that’s the core of it. i think that’s what persuades pepper to stay. tony is a person who’s been lost for a long, long time. he’s been drowning in a sea of his own bullshit and he hasn’t seen land for years. tony at the start of iron man doesn’t know who he is, he has become so lost in all his masks that he’s forgotten that there’s a person actually wearing them. it’s made explicit in the scene on the plane where rhodey tells him “you are more than what you are”. that scene tells us both that tony doesn’t know who he is, and that his friends can see who he is and are disheartened that he isn’t living up to that

so when tony tells pepper not only that he knows what he has to do, but that his heart knows that it’s right she is seeing him recognise that there is a man behind his masks, and he’s telling her that man isn’t so lost any more. it’s especially important that this follows “there is nothing except the next mission” because that just sounds like a man who is even more lost, to the point where it’s scary (no wonder she quits, a tony even more lost from himself who is building himself a new metal mask is terrifying). but then tony admits that he hasn’t known what to do or who to be but that he’s finally worked it out. of course she’s going to stay after that, it’s what she’s been waiting to hear for years
