Tony trying desperately to talk Quill down. He’s only known this man for
hours, not particularly been a fan, but he knows this rage all too well.
He burned men alive after losing Yinsen, blew up Killian for threatening Pepper (not his fault it didn’t take), and tried to kill Bucky to avenge his parents, putting him in near-lethal combat with Steve. Tony knows all about losing it in the clutch, so his noble attempt to keep Quill from the same is devastating in its failure.

One thing that adds to this, is the fact that this isn’t the first time
Tony has had to beg someone to ‘stick to the plan’. However, unlike
Yinsen, who paid for it with his own life, Quill was going to pay for it
with not just his own life, but trillions more. (x)
